Satan's Bolete

 

Poisonous.

 

Cap :  Pale grey with olive, brownish spots; margins can be pinkish especially in age. 10-25 (30) cm in diameter, at first hemispheric later becoming convex. Surface glabrous or finely tomentose, areolate during dry weather and subviscid when moistened; margin acute, undulating.

Pores At first yellow, soon red, paler orange-yellow to cap margin; turn blue when bruised. Tubes yellow, bruising blue when exposed, in age olive; cap context above tubes yellow; depressed at stipe; 10-30 mm long.

Stipe :  Bulbous, 10-12 x 5-10 cm; upper part yellow, toward base carmine-red, sometimes only at the base red; upper part with yellowish to red reticulation.

 

Habitat :

Fall - early winter, solitary or gregarious in warm places, under beech and oaks, on calcareous soils.
