Summer starts on the 21st of June, Summer Solstice : the longest day
of the year when the sun is at its highest in the sky, giving this
impression of neverending daytime. From now on, the days will slowly
grow shorter and shorter until Winter Solstice on the 21st of
December.

24th of June, La St-Jean : It used to be a great celebration
in the villages of France. People would light bonfires in
celebration of the sun, pick up ivy or fern known for their
medicinal properties at dawn, before the morning dew had
dried. |

In
July, the
sun rises around 4:35am and sets around 9pm. The days get 1 minute
shorter every morning and every evening.

A few national days take place in June or July. In France it
is on the 14th of July, big celebrations take place on that
particular day when the French Revolution started. People walk
in the streets with little lanterns and fireworks are lit all
over the country.

In
August, the
sun rises at 5:10am and sets around 20:30pm. The days get 2 minutes
shorter every morning and every evening.

On the 15th of August, Christians celebrate the miraculous
assending of the Virgin Mary to Heaven. It's the feast of
Assumption.
In the past, the villagers would come to the Virgin statue and
put a bunch of black grapes in her right hand. They would make
hudge bunches of flowers, vegetable and wheatear. This feast
used to celebrate the start of the harvest. |
